Partners for value: CSE drives our transport fleet to a more sustainable future

At Ardagh Metal Packaging (AMP), we know that exceeding the expectations of our customers goes beyond cost savings and service. We aim to be a partner for all types of value for our clients; after all, AMP is a global supplier of infinitely sustainable packaging solutions. That means we are committed to building from the inherent environmental advantages our products provide to set new standards of sustainability excellence.
For years, we’ve been researching ways to optimise our delivery network to ensure that our product distribution process aligns with our environmental strategy. According to Wilfried Ploegmakers, Ardagh’s Supply & Demand Matter Expert, “Transitioning our operations toward a sustainable future requires entrepreneurship, courage and loyalty – and it cannot be done alone. You need good partners to drive real change.”
That’s where our friends at Cargo Service Europe (CSE) came in with their own value proposition for our operations in AMP-Europe. CSE is a transport supplier and logistics provider that offers eco-friendly, just-in-time beverage can delivery from can production facilities to beverage supplier facilities. Their motto—Quality by difference—reflects their continued dedication to providing client solutions that are flexible, sustainable and efficient.
To pursue these aims they have created a state-of-the-art zero emissions distribution lane that allows AMP-E to transport finished aluminium can bodies produced in our Oss, Netherlands facility to CSE’s logistics distribution warehouse in Weert.
This was accomplished through the deployment of our first ever Commercial Battery Vehicles (BEV). These heavy goods trucks, supplied by Volvo, are powered by 540-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion traction batteries with a range of up to 300km. CSE’s onsite fast-charging power stations keep the fleet in continuous motion, averaging six plant-to-warehouse trips per day.
Unlike a diesel transportation truck pulling a standard 13.6m trailer, the BEVs tractor units actually pull two 26-meter jumbo-sized trailers together in an LZV combination. This results in 25%-30% in efficiency savings – or a total of ~280 tons of CO2e per year.
In the end, this project will significantly contribute towards Ardagh’s commitment to reducing its scope 3 emissions 12.3% by 2030 (vs 2020 baseline), a target the organisation set in line with the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) in 2022.
The effort and expertise of our AMP-Europe team, combined with the ingenuity of value partners like CSE, allow us to remain focused on strengthening our sustainability strategies while exceeding our customers’ expectations. Our mission is to continue to build upon the inherent environmental excellence of metal beverage cans, revolutionising the industry and advancing our commitment toward net zero emissions by 2050.
